Grapes: Syrah, Grenache, Carignan
The purchase of the domain in the Roussillon turned out to be an inspired move for Château de Gaure. The wonderful old Carignan vines on their own produce vigorous grapes that make it a perfect basis for a special red wine. This particular wine is made from Syrah along with Grenache and Carignan grapes cultivated in the Agly Valley between Perpignan and Maury. The poverty of the soils along with the advanced age of the vines creates varying undertones and a powerful, full-bodied taste. The Roussillon has a hot climate, heightening the concentration of the grapes grown here. These vineyards have been farmed organically since 2005, producing yields of just 15-20 hectolitres per hectare. The grapes are harvested by hand and fermented in cement vats, after which they are aged in used casks to avoid being dominated by wood. The result is splendidly fruity, fresh and elegant. Plums and cherries, currants and Mediterranean herbs, thyme, stony and full-bodied with a trace of vanilla. Ripe and gentle, elegant, juicy, palatable, pleasant acid tones and a light tannin content. A supple red wine. Lamb roast, pasta with meat sauce, mature cheeses.
